Gurren Lagann plot recap, spoiler-light
Gurren Lagann follows humanity forced to live in underground villages by the Spiral King, Lordgenome, and his Beastmen army. In Giha village, a timid young digger named Simon discovers a tiny drill-shaped key called a Core Drill and a small facial mecha known as Lagann. Alongside his passionate older brother figure Kamina and a surface dweller named Yoko, Simon breaks through the cavern ceiling into the harsh surface world.
Kamina hijacks an enemy mecha named Gurren, combining it with Lagann to form Gurren Lagann. They inspire other humans to join them, forming Team Dai-Gurren. Although Kamina falls in battle against one of Lordgenome's generals, Simon overcomes his grief with the help of Lordgenome's daughter, Nia.
Team Dai-Gurren eventually storms the capital of Teppelin, where Simon defeats Lordgenome in hand-to-hand combat using his Core Drill. Seven years later, humanity prospers under Simon and his comrades serving as the world's government in Kamina City. However, the human population reaches one million, triggering the arrival of the Anti-Spirals, who use Nia as their messenger and hurl the Moon toward Earth to prevent a cataclysmic Spiral Nemesis.
