Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress plot recap, spoiler-light
Set during an industrial revolution on the eastern island of Hinomoto, humanity faces a terrifying crisis when a mysterious virus turns infected humans into aggressive, iron-hearted undead creatures known as Kabane. To survive, people construct fortified stations and travel between them using heavily armored steam locomotives called hayajirō. Aragane Station suffers a devastating breach when a hijacked locomotive crashes into its walls, unleashing a massive horde of monsters upon the populace.
Amidst the chaos, a young engineer named Ikoma seizes the opportunity to test his newly invented weapon, the Piercing Gun. Although the weapon successfully pierces a monster, Ikoma is bitten in the process. Through sheer willpower, he halts the virus from reaching his brain, transforming into a hybrid known as a Kabaneri.
He soon crosses paths with Mūmei, another Kabaneri who aids the beleaguered citizens. Together, Ikoma, Mūmei, and the remaining human survivors board the steam locomotive named Kōtetsujō, leaving their fallen home behind to seek a safer refuge while battling relentless hordes of the undead along the perilous railways of Hinomoto.
