Kamisama Kiss plot recap, spoiler-light
Nanami Momozono starts out as an ordinary high school student longing for a normal life, but her irresponsible father abandons her after accumulating massive gambling debts. Debt collectors promptly evict her, leaving her entirely homeless and stranded on a park bench. While contemplating her bleak circumstances, she encounters a frightened man named Mikage hanging from a tree while being chased by a dog.
After she rescues him and explains her desperate situation, Mikage expresses his gratitude by offering her his home. Arriving at the designated location, Nanami is shocked to find not a conventional house, but a sprawling spiritual shrine. She is greeted by the shrine guardians Onikiri and Kotetsu, alongside Tomoe, a powerful yōkai familiar who served Mikage.
She quickly discovers that Mikage transferred his divine status as the local Land God to her, marking her forehead and making her his successor. Although she is initially overwhelmed, Nanami slowly adapts to her new responsibilities, striving to manage her divine duties while living alongside Tomoe and the other shrine attendants.
