LOOK BACK plot recap, spoiler-light
Ayumu Fujino is a confident elementary schooler who draws popular manga strips for the school paper until a shut-in classmate named Kyomoto begins submitting superior background art. Driven by fierce rivalry and envy, Fujino obsesses over improving her own skills, inadvertently alienating her friends before eventually quitting altogether. Years later, an awkward delivery of a diploma leads to a fateful reunion at Kyomoto's house, where Fujino discovers that Kyomoto is a devoted fan of her work.
Reinvigorated by this adoration, Fujino resumes drawing, and the two eventually form a successful creative partnership. They produce award-winning one-shots together until Kyomoto decides to attend art school for formal training. Although Fujino continues her career alone and achieves massive success with her serialized manga Shark Kick, she remains unfulfilled without her creative partner by her side. Tragedy strikes when a violent attack at the art university claims Kyomoto's life, leaving a devastated Fujino to grapple with overwhelming guilt and the feeling that her art has lost all meaning.
