In 1950, stateless arms dealer and industrialist Anatole Zsa-Zsa Korda survives yet another assassination attempt. Realizing the precariousness of his life, he attempts to reconnect with his only daughter, Catholic novice Sister Liesl, naming her the sole heir to his vast estate. Korda brings Liesl and Bjørn, a Norwegian entomologist and administrative assistant, along on a journey to secure funding for his massive infrastructural project in Phoenicia.
A global consortium of governments has artificially driven up material costs, threatening to bankrupt Korda. Throughout their travels, Korda attempts to swindle, blackmail, and threaten his business partners to cover the budget shortfall. Along the way, Korda experiences visions of an afterlife court and confesses to Liesl his dark past, including his role in her mother's tragic death.
Despite her outrage, Liesl continues to aid him. After a sabotage attempt destroys his plane and Bjørn is revealed to be a government spy who switches sides for love, Korda finds himself forced to face his estranged half-brother and rival Nubar for financial salvation.
Anatole Zsa-Zsa Korda sacrifices his entire personal fortune to complete the Phoenician scheme and pay his workers fairly.
During the confrontation at the Desert Oasis Palace hotel, Korda kills his estranged half-brother Nubar after Nubar attempts to murder him.
Liesl reconciles with Korda, and the two start a new, simpler life together running a small bistro.
Bjørn proposes to Liesl with a ring returned by Hilda, and the story concludes with Liesl and Korda playing cards as a family.
The final act of The Phoenician Scheme brings the sprawling financial and familial conflicts to a head as Anatole Zsa-Zsa Korda, Liesl, and Bjørn finally meet with Nubar. During this encounter, Nubar denies being Liesl's biological father and announces that he is pulling his entire investment out of the project. Left with a massive budget shortfall and unable to secure further backing from his reluctant partners, Korda makes a radical choice.
He decides to throw his entire personal fortune into the Phoenician scheme, driven by the belief that completing a truly worthy project will finally give his troubled life some genuine meaning. In a further shift in character, Korda commits to paying his workers properly and officially converts to Catholicism. Following these decisions, the major investors gather together at the Desert Oasis Palace hotel so they can witness the formal presentation of the completed scheme.
The gathering turns violent when Nubar reappears and reveals that he was the mastermind behind the numerous attempts on Korda's life, driven by a deeply rooted grudge. Nubar attempts to murder Korda personally, but Korda manages to fatally wound him before Nubar can detonate a grenade. In the aftermath of the explosion and the chaos at the hotel, a bankrupted Korda finds himself entirely financially ruined.
However, this loss paves the way for emotional recovery. Liesl fully reconciles with Korda, choosing to accept him as her true father despite everything, and the two decide to retire away from the cutthroat industrial world to run a small bistro together. Meanwhile, Hilda has her very brief marriage to Korda annulled and returns her wedding ring.
Demonstrating a new, tender dynamic, Korda borrows that very ring and loans it to Bjørn, who promptly uses it to propose to Liesl. She accepts his proposal. The film reaches its final image with Liesl and Korda sitting down at the end of the working day to play a quiet game of cards together, having finally found peace as a family.
What does the ending of The Phoenician Scheme mean?
One reading of the conclusion of The Phoenician Scheme is that true redemption requires the total dismantling of greed. Korda transitions from an amoral industrialist who views family solely through the lens of financial inheritance to a humbled man who trades his entire fortune for moral integrity and genuine familial connection. The narrative resolves the tension between worldly power and spiritual peace, suggesting that legacy is not built on monumental infrastructure or stolen fortunes, but on quiet moments of human connection, such as playing cards at the end of the day.
