Angel Beats! plot recap, spoiler-light
Angel Beats! unfolds in an afterlife realm structured like a high school, serving as a transitional limbo for souls carrying unresolved trauma and pain from their living years. Yuzuru Otonashi arrives in this strange setting with complete amnesia regarding his past existence.
He soon encounters Yuri Nakamura, who leads the Afterlife Battlefront, an armed student group rebelling against an unseen deity they hold responsible for their tragic fates. Their primary target is the student council president known as Angel, wielding supernatural abilities and presumed to be aligned with the divine order. As Otonashi gets involved in the faction's operations, he crosses paths with fellow students like Hideki Hinata, musician Masami Iwasawa, and energetic fan Yui.
Over time, Iwasawa and Yui achieve inner peace and disappear from the realm. Otonashi eventually recovers his lost memories through hypnosis and befriends Angel, whose true identity is Kanade Tachibana. After realizing Kanade is not an enemy, Otonashi joins her to help the remaining students resolve their personal regrets and depart peacefully from the afterlife.
