Children of Blood and Bone plot recap, spoiler-light
In the fictional realm of Orïsha, the brutal King Saran stripped the magical divîner people of their powers eleven years prior. A young divîner named Zélie Adebola, whose mother was killed during the purge, crosses paths with runaway Princess Amari. Amari has stolen a magical scroll that can awaken dormant powers in any divîner who touches it.
Joined by Zélie's brother Tzain, the trio flees across the kingdom to escape royal guards led by Prince Inan and Admiral Kaea. Along their journey, they seek out sacred artifacts including a bone dagger and a sunstone to perform a dangerous ritual that can reconnect the maji with the gods. Prince Inan struggles with his own awakening magical abilities while hunting the group, eventually joining forces with Zélie before turning back out of fear of his father.
Saran tracks them down, destroying their camp and capturing Zélie. Although Tzain and Amari help rescue Zélie from imprisonment, Saran and Inan ambush the group again at the secret island temple just as they prepare to perform the ritual.
