On the rugged island of Berk, young outcast Hiccup struggles to fit in with his traditional Viking community while dealing with frequent dragon raids. Desperate to prove himself to his chieftain father, Stoick the Vast, Hiccup uses a mechanical device to shoot down a feared Night Fury. However, upon finding the injured creature trapped in a cove, Hiccup shows compassion and releases it instead of killing it.
Naming the dragon Toothless, Hiccup builds him a prosthetic tail fin and a special saddle, learning that dragons are actually gentle creatures acting out of fear of a massive alpha dragon named the Red Death. While attempting to shield Toothless from the village, Hiccup uses his new insights to excel in dragon training, gaining the respect of his peers, particularly Astrid. Everything changes when Astrid discovers Toothless, and a fateful flight leads them to discover the true source of the island's troubles. When Stoick discovers Hiccup's secret friendship, he captures Toothless and forces the dragon to lead the Viking fleet to the hidden nest, setting the stage for a massive final confrontation.
