Cowboy Bebop plot recap, spoiler-light
Set in the year 2071, roughly fifty years after a hyperspace gateway disaster rendered Earth mostly uninhabitable, humanity has spread across the solar system. To combat rising crime, the Inter Solar System Police established a legal bounty system, sending registered bounty hunters known as cowboys across the stars. Operating from their spaceship, the Bebop, the crew features Spike Spiegel, an exiled hitman from the Red Dragon Syndicate, and Jet Black, a former police officer.
Over time, they are joined by Faye Valentine, an amnesiac con artist; Edward Wong, an eccentric hacker child; and Ein, an engineered dog with human-like intelligence. While taking on various jobs to survive, the crew frequently faces lingering ghosts from their previous lives, including Jet's departure from the police and Faye's forgotten past on Earth. Eventually, the narrative zeroes in on Spike's dangerous history with Vicious, a ruthless syndicate member. Once allies, their relationship fractured when Spike fell in love with Vicious's girlfriend, Julia, prompting a failed assassination plot, Spike's faked death, and Julia's long concealment.
