DRIFTERS plot recap, spoiler-light
The narrative begins during the historical Battle of Sekigahara, where the samurai Shimazu Toyohisa gravely wounds Ii Naomasa while suffering critical injuries himself. As he bleeds out on the battlefield, Toyohisa wanders into a strange hallway filled with doors and a bespectacled man named Murasaki sitting at a desk. Murasaki thrusts the samurai through a nearby door, dropping him into an unfamiliar fantasy realm populated by elves, dwarves, and hobbits alongside human inhabitants.
In this alternate world, Toyohisa discovers he is not alone, encountering other legendary historical fighters who are similarly displaced and classified as Drifters. These warriors soon learn they have been summoned to participate in an unrelenting survival struggle. The realm is currently engulfed in a brutal war, with native humans steadily losing ground to a terrifying opposing faction called the Ends.
Commanded by powerful figures who lead armies of dragons and giants, the Ends are systematically conquering the northern territories and pushing south toward a crucial fortress in Carneades. To counter this existential threat, a local faction of human magicians named the Octobrist Organization works tirelessly to unite the scattered Drifters.
