Elfen Lied plot recap, spoiler-light
The story of Elfen Lied centers on the Diclonius, a mutated branch of humanity marked by two horns and a sixth sense granting powerful telekinetic abilities. Regarded by some as a destructive force meant to replace mankind, these individuals are captured and isolated in secret government laboratories for study and containment. The narrative shifts into high gear when a young and psychotic Diclonius named Lucy manages to break out of her secure facility.
During her violent escape, she brutally eliminates most of the guards standing in her way. As she finally makes her way outside to freedom, she is struck in the head by a gunshot. Miraculously surviving the severe trauma, she falls from a high cliff directly into the ocean below.
Her body drifts passively with the tides until she washes ashore on a public beach. There, she is serendipitously discovered by two teenagers named Kouta and Yuka. Having suffered total memory loss from her ordeal, and capable of uttering only a single sound, she is affectionately named Nyuu by the pair. Kouta and Yuka generously allow her to live at Kouta's home, unaware that Nyuu's violent and psychotic alter ego may still be lurking beneath the surface.
