In Fate/kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya, an ordinary schoolgirl named Illyasviel von Einzbern is forced to become a magical girl when the sentient wand Ruby abandons its master, the sorceress Rin Tohsaka. Tasked by the wizard Zelretch to collect seven legendary Class Cards, Illya soon finds a partner and rival in Miyu, who wields Sapphire, the wand of Rin's rival Luvia Edelfelt. After gathering all the cards, the girls face new complications with the arrival of Kuro, a duplicate of Illya born from a sealed Holy Grail construct whom Illya ultimately accepts into her family.
Soon after, the group encounters the ruthless enforcer Bazett and discovers the existence of an eighth Class Card. This eighth card turns out to be Gilgamesh, who captures Miyu after revealing her origins as a parallel world Holy Grail. By merging Ruby and Sapphire into Kaleido Liner Zwei, Illya defeats Gilgamesh, rescues her friend, and restores temporary peace until Miyu is suddenly abducted by the mysterious Ainsworth family and dragged into a parallel dimension.
