Set in a post-apocalyptic New Zealand overrun by violent cannibalistic creatures called Howlers, the story follows a grieving mother named Rory. After being forced to kill her infected daughter Matty and burying her alongside her husband, Rory isolates herself in a rural mountain compound with her father-in-law, Otto. While struggling with intense grief and suicidal thoughts, Rory's quiet isolation is interrupted when a wounded stranger named Noah seeks shelter.
Noah has fled from a government camp managed by a ruthless leader named Logan, escaping with a vital serum that can treat Howlers. Logan and his agents pursue Noah relentlessly, executing his companion Lockie. Otto reluctantly permits Rory to patch up Noah's injuries, provided he departs immediately the next morning.
