From the New World plot recap, spoiler-light
In the agrarian settlement of Kamisu 66 one thousand years after the fall of modern civilization, humans wield powerful psychokinesis called Canto. To prevent the violence that previously destroyed the world, society relies on genetic conditioning, including Attack Inhibition and Death Feedback, which kills anyone who harms another human. Saki Watanabe and her friends Satoru Asahina, Maria Akizuki, Mamoru Itou, and Shun Aonuma grow up in this seemingly peaceful utopia.
However, their discovery of forbidden history from a past relic sets off a series of harrowing events. Over time, Shun falls victim to an uncontrollable power disorder known as a Karmic Demon and takes his own life. Later, Mamoru and Maria flee the settlement to escape being targeted by the governing authorities, supposedly perishing in the wild. Years pass, and Saki works in Mutant Management while an ambitious Queerat named Squealer, now known as Yakomaru, unites rival colonies and wages a devastating war against Kamisu 66 using a raised Fiend designed to bypass human psychological safety restrictions.
