The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya plot recap, spoiler-light
It is mid-December, and SOS Brigade chief Haruhi Suzumiya announces that the Brigade is going to hold a Christmas party in their clubroom, with Japanese hotpot for dinner. The brigade members start preparing everything, but a couple of days later, on the morning of December 18, Kyon arrives at school to find that the nature of his reality has changed. Haruhi and Itsuki Koizumi are missing, Ryoko Asakura has mysteriously returned, Mikuru Asahina does not recognize him, and Yuki Nagato has become an ordinary human and the sole member of the literature club.
Only Kyon is aware that everything is different, and no one else remembers Haruhi or the SOS Brigade. Searching the clubroom, Kyon finds a bookmark left by Yuki before everything was changed, telling him to gather keys to run a program. He accepts a dinner invitation from the new Yuki, and later learns from Taniguchi that Haruhi still exists at a different high school.
Kyon convinces Haruhi of his identity by revealing himself as John Smith, an alias he used when he traveled back in time to assist a young Haruhi. Excited, Haruhi assembles the club's members and brings them to the clubroom, providing the required keys for Yuki's program.
