In the anime Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash, a group of strangers wakes up in a strange, game-like world with hazy memories and the knowledge of their name. Leftover from stronger groups, Haruhiro, Yume, Shihoru, Mogzo, Ranta, and their initial leader Manato form a party out of necessity. They become Trainee Volunteer Soldiers, forced to hunt weak goblins just to pay for basic necessities.
The early days are marked by struggle, fear, and awkward combat encounters as they learn that death in this world is permanent. They take in a guarded new priest named Merry, who carries her own heavy trauma from losing her previous companions.
