Hell’s Paradise plot recap, spoiler-light
Set during the waning days of the Edo period, the narrative follows Gabimaru, a shinobi widely regarded as the strongest in Iwagakure. Despite being sentenced to execution, Gabimaru survives every attempt on his life due to his extraordinary, superhuman body, a resilience he attributes to his deep love for his wife. Yamada Asaemon Sagiri, an executioner, offers him a path to a full pardon from the Shogunate.
To earn his freedom, Gabimaru must travel to a legendary realm southwest of the Ryukyu Kingdom known as Shinsenkyo or Sukhavati to retrieve the elusive Elixir of Life. Following the mysterious failures of five prior expedition teams, the Shogunate shifts tactics by dispatching a contingent of death row convicts. Each convict is paired with a specific Yamada Asaemon executioner whom they must successfully return with alongside the elixir to secure their freedom. Upon reaching the island, Gabimaru and Sagiri encounter rival convicts, unknown creatures, eerie manmade statues, and powerful hermits ruling the domain, setting the stage for a dangerous confrontation.
