Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid plot recap, spoiler-light
As March begins and Mai Sakurajima prepares for graduation, Sakuta Azusagawa encounters a mysterious elementary school girl who resembles a young Mai. Shortly after, Sakuta receives a phone call from his father regarding their estranged mother. Their mother, who has long struggled with mental health issues following Kaede's trauma, finally expresses a desire to see her daughter again.
The family arranges a dinner, and Kaede successfully graduates from middle school. However, following these events, Sakuta wakes up to find himself completely invisible and unheard by the people around him. He deduces that his mother's recovery means his role as a caregiver is supposedly no longer needed, triggering a new case of puberty syndrome tied to his birth and umbilical cord. Young Mai guides him through this crisis, leading him temporarily into an alternate reality where Kaede never suffered from bullying, though Sakuta soon realizes this fabricated life is not where he belongs.
