Kyon is a typical high school student who has long abandoned any belief in the supernatural. Everything changes when he meets the whimsical Haruhi Suzumiya, a girl whose primary interests lie in aliens, time travelers, and espers. When Haruhi laments the boring lack of intriguing clubs at their school, Kyon accidentally inspires her to create her very own organization.
This leads to the establishment of the SOS Brigade, a club dedicated entirely to investigating all things supernatural. Much to Kyon's initial chagrin and surprise, he is quickly roped into joining. He is soon joined by three other recruits: Yuki Nagato, a silent bookworm; Mikuru Asahina, a shy and timid upperclassman; and Itsuki Koizumi, a perpetually smiling new student.
