The Return plot recap, spoiler-light
After spending two decades away fighting in the Trojan War and enduring countless trials, a weary and unrecognizable Odysseus washes ashore on his native island of Ithaca. Found by the loyal slaves Eumaeus and Yias, the traumatized king discovers that his homeland has fallen into decay and disorder. Back at the palace, his faithful wife Penelope resists immense pressure from an aggressive group of noble suitors who believe Odysseus is dead and demand she choose a new husband.
To buy time, Penelope cleverly weaves and unweaves a burial shroud and wedding cloak. Meanwhile, her young son Telemachus struggles against the hostile suitors, particularly the manipulative Antinous. Odysseus infiltrates his own palace disguised as a beggar, enduring humiliation and abuse from the arrogant men who have taken over his home. Although his loyal hunting dog Argos recognizes him before dying, Odysseus must remain hidden as tensions escalate and the suitors plot to assassinate Telemachus in the woods, setting the stage for a violent reckoning.
