Long ago, a destructive monster called Nergal emerged from the Sea of Ash, overwhelming humanity until a legendary Ribbon Hero arose. In the present, Princess Sapphire survives the ruin of her castle by Nergal, which contaminates her parents and forces her people to flee. Escaping with Zirco, Sapphire spends seven long years wandering before they finally arrive in Goldland starving and seeking work.
They befriend a local girl named Pine and join a group of miners to earn a living. While mining crystals, the Ash King attacks, causing Sapphire to fall into a cavern where she awakens her latent abilities as the Ribbon Hero, dubbing herself the Princess Knight. She soon learns from Velvet that Nergal consumes human souls after depleting the local crystals. Entering the Pillar of Creation, Sapphire battles the threat and unexpectedly unlocks a power that turns her into a white swan, setting the stage for a massive final confrontation as Nergal's spores spread to the capital and threaten Goldland entirely.
