The story of The Rising of the Shield Hero begins when an easygoing young Japanese man named Naofumi Iwatani is suddenly summoned into a fantasy parallel world. He joins three other young men from parallel universes, and together they are designated as the realm's Cardinal Heroes. Their primary mission is to fight off inter-dimensional hordes of monsters known as Waves in order to eventually return home.
Each hero wields a legendary weapon, but Naofumi receives the defensive Legendary Shield, while the others obtain offensive weapons like a sword, a spear, and a bow. Because Naofumi lacks prior computer game experience which the status magic resembles, and because his equipment is purely defensive, he is immediately deemed the weakest. The kingdom fully supports the other heroes, but Naofumi's situation drastically worsens when his sole companion, a princess of the realm, betrays him. She frames him for sexual assault, steals his belongings, and leaves him entirely destitute and isolated in a hostile society.
