Another plot recap, spoiler-light
When Kouichi Sakakibara transfers into Yomiyama North Middle School's class 3-3 in the spring of 1998, he immediately senses a frightening atmosphere that no one is willing to discuss. At the center of this unsettling environment is Mei Misaki, a quiet student whom both the teacher and her classmates completely ignore, acting as though she does not exist. Kouichi is naturally drawn to her mysterious presence.
Soon after his arrival, a terrifying phenomenon begins to unfold around them. This event, known as the calamity, causes students of class 3-3 and their relatives to die in peculiarly gruesome ways. It is soon revealed that these horrific occurrences are connected to an incident from 1972 involving a popular student named Misaki who died partway through the school year, prompting her peers to pretend she was still alive. As the body count rises, Kouichi and Mei work together to investigate the dark history of the school and figure out how to stop the yearly tragedy before it claims everyone left in the class.
