Ascendance of a Bookworm plot recap, spoiler-light
The story begins with Urano Motosu, a dedicated book lover and aspiring librarian living in Tokyo. During a sudden earthquake, falling stacks of books crush her to death. As she perishes, she desperately wishes to spend her next life surrounded by books.
Her wish is granted when she awakens inside the body of a frail five-year-old girl named Myne. However, she quickly discovers that her new reality is a medieval society where books are extremely scarce luxury items owned exclusively by the ruling elite. Distressed by this lack of reading material, Myne refuses to give up her passion.
Because she cannot simply buy or borrow books, she resolves to make them herself. Relying on her modern knowledge and memories, she sets out to invent paper, ink, and other necessary materials from scratch. Along the way, she navigates the challenges of her weak physical constitution and tries to help her bewildered family and friends understand her sudden change in personality. Her ultimate goal remains clear throughout the setup: she will do whatever it takes to bring books to the masses.
