My Neighbor Totoro plot recap, spoiler-light
Set in 1950s rural Japan, university professor Tatsuo Kusakabe relocates to an old farmhouse with his young daughters, Satsuki and Mei. They move closer to the hospital where Yasuko, the girls' mother, is recovering from a prolonged illness. The house turns out to be full of tiny, dark dust spirits known as susuwatari, though these creatures soon depart for a new empty home.
While exploring the surrounding countryside, four-year-old Mei discovers two small spirit creatures that lead her into the hollow base of a massive camphor tree. There, she encounters a gigantic, friendly forest spirit whom she names Totoro after misunderstanding his roars. Although Mei initially struggles to prove Totoro's existence to her family, her father gently explains that the spirit will show himself when he is ready.
Later, during a rainy evening while waiting for their father's delayed bus, Satsuki finally meets Totoro herself and lends him an umbrella. The magical bond deepens when Totoro helps the girls grow planted seeds into a giant tree during a midnight ritual, treating them to a whimsical flight across the night sky.
