Hamnet plot recap, spoiler-light
In Stratford, England, tutor William Shakespeare meets the mysterious Agnes, who possesses herbal lore and falconry skills. After Agnes falls pregnant, they marry hurriedly and move in with William's family, where Agnes gives birth to their first daughter, Susanna. Agnes suggests to her brother Bartholomew to send William to London to pursue his writing career, leaving her and Susanna in Stratford.
Later, Agnes gives birth to twins Hamnet and Judith, with Judith miraculously surviving a seemingly stillborn birth thanks to Agnes's fierce determination. As the children grow up, William visits intermittently, while Hamnet and Judith remain exceptionally close. During a plague outbreak, Judith falls gravely ill, prompting Hamnet to bravely offer to take her place.
While Judith recovers, Hamnet unexpectedly falls ill with the plague and passes away. His death shatters the family, leaving William heartbroken and placing a heavy strain on his marriage to Agnes. William purchases a grand house in Stratford before returning to London, while a grief-stricken Agnes struggles to find meaning in the tragedy. Meanwhile, William labors in London to stage a new play, wrestling with his profound grief and the flat delivery of his cast members.
