Bethlehem Kudumba Unit begins with Ashley returning to Kerala after spending a year and a half studying abroad in Ireland. Seeing a wedding celebration taking place next door immediately stirs memories of Justin, prompting the narrative to flash back two years. Relocating from Mundakkayam to Angamaly due to family economic hardship, Ashley must leave behind her familiar life, band, and friends.
In her new neighbourhood, organised as the Bethlehem Small Christian Community unit, she meets Justin, a respected bachelor in his mid-thirties who manages a catering enterprise and supports his brother Joel. Bonding deeply over shared musical tastes such as The Breeders, Ashley eventually confesses her romantic feelings for him. Though initially hesitant due to their age difference and unresolved personal grief, Justin reciprocates with encouragement from his aunt, Kunjaunty. However, their secret courtship collapses when Ashley's uncle Alex discovers and exposes them, leading her family to fiercely oppose the union and prompting Justin to urge Ashley to pursue her overseas education.
