In the sweltering heat of a small Texas town, drifter Harry Madox takes a job as a used car salesman. He soon becomes infatuated with Gloria Harper, a quiet young woman working in the dealership's loan office who wears distinctive shoes adorned with wooden fruit. At the same time, Harry begins a passionate affair with Dolly Harshaw, the flirtatious wife of the dealership's owner.
Seeking money, Harry orchestrates a daring robbery of the local bank while the staff, who double as volunteer firemen, are lured away by a staged fire. Although Harry attempts to save a trapped homeless man during the chaos, the local sheriff soon suspects him. Dolly provides a crucial alibi but demands that Harry murder her wealthy husband in exchange for her silence.
When Harry refuses, Dolly takes matters into her own hands and kills her husband herself by overstimulating his weak heart. Meanwhile, Harry discovers that a local criminal named Frank Sutton has been blackmailing Gloria with compromising photographs, driving Gloria's best friend to suicide. Driven by his love for Gloria, Harry confronts Sutton to retrieve the photos.
