Three years after becoming a chieftess, Moana receives a vital vision from her ancestor Tautai Vasa. She learns that the storm god Nalo sunk the island of Motufetu, disconnecting all the ocean's people and threatening Motunui with extinction. Answering this ancestral call, Moana gathers a crew consisting of craftswoman Loto, historian Moni, elderly farmer Kele, and her animal companions to follow a comet across the sea.
Along the way, they navigate dangerous waters and escape the Kakamora with the help of Kotu. They manage to locate Maui, who had been captured by Nalo's enforcer Matangi. After Matangi aids their escape, the group faces treacherous monster attacks and finds themselves washed ashore on an isolated island.
Though discouraged at first, Moana regains her resolve with Maui's encouragement. Her crew diligently repairs their raft as the team prepares to confront Nalo directly, determined to raise Motufetu and break the ancient curse once and for all.
Moana sacrifices herself to touch Motufetu, but her ancestors and Maui revive her as a demigoddess.
Maui regains his powers and successfully raises the legendary island to reconnect all of Oceania's people.
The crew returns to Motunui to lead a triumphant flotilla celebration honoring Moana's journey.
The story leaves a sequel hook open as Nalo plots revenge alongside Tamatoa.
The final act begins as Moana and her companions sail directly into a gigantic, violent storm created by Nalo to stop mortals from breaking the curse. Realizing the danger, Moana instructs Maui to lift Motufetu high enough so that she can make physical contact with it. Maui uses his giant hook to pull the island upward, but Nalo retaliates swiftly by stripping the demigod of his powers using a powerful lightning bolt.
Driven by desperation, Moana dives straight into the turbulent ocean waters to touch Motufetu underwater. She succeeds in her mission, but Nalo's lethal lightning strikes and kills her in the process. Grief-stricken, Maui jumps into the depths after her body and uses a magical chant to summon the spirits of Tautai Vasa and other ancestors, including her grandmother Tala.
Together, their combined magic revives Moana, transforming her into a demigoddess and granting her a special wayfinder's tattoo. Empowered once more, Maui regains his demigod abilities, fully raises Motufetu above the waves, and helps Moana successfully reconnect all the scattered people with the ocean. The narrative then shifts to the triumphant return of Moana and her loyal crew to Motunui.
They lead a grand flotilla of ocean people, and a massive celebration is held to honor Moana's incredible achievements. In the final scene, the story leaves the future open as Nalo plots his revenge and prepares to punish Matangi for her betrayal, only to be interrupted by the arrival of the giant crab Tamatoa, who steps in to join Nalo's malicious cause.
What does the ending of Moana 2 mean?
One reading of the ending of Moana 2 is that it emphasizes the enduring power of community, ancestral legacy, and self-sacrificing leadership. By dying and being reborn as a demigoddess, Moana embodies the spiritual bridge between mortals and the divine. The resolution of the central conflict resolves themes of isolation by physically and metaphorically reuniting the fractured peoples of Oceania.
Furthermore, the final scenes highlight that true strength comes from collective heritage rather than individual might alone. While the main plot concludes with peace in Motunui, the unresolved final image suggests that conflict is a continuous cycle, leaving open the ongoing struggle between creation and destruction.
