Michael plot recap, spoiler-light
The biographical drama Michael chronicles the remarkable life and career of the legendary artist. Beginning in 1966, steel worker Joseph Jackson organizes his sons into the musical group The Jackson 5, featuring a young Michael on lead vocals. Following rigorous rehearsals, talent scout Suzanne De Passe discovers them in Chicago in 1968, leading to a Motown contract a year later.
Massive success soon follows, enabling the family to relocate from Gary, Indiana, to the Hayvenhurst mansion in California by 1971. As Motown founder Berry Gordy recognizes Michael's immense solo potential, tensions begin to rise. By 1978, Michael signs with Epic Records to produce his adult solo debut, Off the Wall, alongside producer Quincy Jones.
However, Joseph attempts to limit Michael's independent ambitions, demanding he continue touring with his brothers. Battling personal insecurities and the onset of vitiligo, Michael undergoes cosmetic surgery. Encouraged by his close confidant Bill Bray, Michael ultimately decides to carve out his own destiny, hiring attorney John Branca and officially dismissing Joseph via fax by 1981.
