Sword of the Stranger plot recap, spoiler-light
Set during the tumultuous Sengoku period of Japan, Sword of the Stranger follows a young boy named Kotaro and his dog Tobimaru as they flee from foreign pursuers. Kotaro is sought by a faction of Ming Chinese warriors led by an elderly master named Bai-Luan, who intend to use the boy's blood to brew a mythical elixir of immortality in a special ritual. Along his journey, Kotaro hires a wandering, red-haired ronin known as Nanashi to act as his bodyguard.
Lord Akaike initially aids the Ming in exchange for gold, but later attempts to hold Kotaro for ransom. After the monks at Mangaku Temple betray Kotaro and hand him over to the Ming, Nanashi learns of the danger. Guided by Tobimaru, Nanashi tracks the boy to a heavily fortified mountain stronghold where the Ming have constructed their ritual altar, setting the stage for a massive violent conflict between the Ming forces and Akaike's ambitious soldiers.
