The story follows sixteen-year-old Godou Kusanagi, a former middle school baseball player whose sports career ended due to an injury. His grandfather asks him to deliver a stone tablet to a friend named Lucrezia Zora in Sardinia. During this trip, Godou meets Erica Blandelli, a demonically manipulative sword-mistress who quickly takes a keen interest in him.
Soon after, Godou encounters Verethragna, the god of war. By defeating this deity in mortal combat, Godou inherits the unwanted position of a Campione, or god slayer. His new responsibility requires him to fight heretical gods whenever they attempt to alter local environments for their own purposes, often harming innocent people in the process.
In addition to facing dangerous divine beings, Godou must deal with the complications of his enhanced status. His position constantly attracts a bevy of overly devoted female followers who claim they are only there to assist with his duties. Erica, who loudly professes her love for Godou, frequently instigates awkward and misunderstood scenarios for him as he navigates his strange new reality.
