Tangled plot recap, spoiler-light
A magical drop of sunlight creates a healing flower that Gothel uses to maintain her youth. When soldiers from the kingdom of Corona take the flower to save their sick, pregnant queen, she gives birth to Rapunzel, whose blonde hair holds the flower's magic. Gothel abducts the baby and raises her in a hidden tower, keeping her isolated.
Each year, the king and queen release sky lanterns in hope of finding their lost child. On the eve of her eighteenth birthday, Rapunzel asks to see the lanterns, but Gothel refuses. Meanwhile, a runaway thief named Eugene Fitzherbert steals the lost princess's tiara and hides in the tower.
Rapunzel knocks him out and strikes a deal: he will guide her to the lanterns in exchange for the tiara. During their journey, they encounter thugs, escape a flooded cave, grow closer, and visit the kingdom for the festival of the lost princess. However, Gothel tracks them down, tricks Rapunzel into believing Eugene abandoned her, and drags her back to the tower.
