The Bay plot recap, spoiler-light
Set during a Fourth of July celebration in Claridge on Maryland's Eastern Shore, The Bay captures an escalating public health catastrophe through recovered digital recordings. The community relies entirely on its surrounding water, which has been contaminated by nearby poultry operations dumping steroid-laden chicken manure alongside other toxins. While broadcast intern Donna Thompson covers the festive waterfront activities, local residents suddenly collapse with terrible skin eruptions, intense pain, and sensations of insects burrowing under their flesh.
At Atlantic Hospital, Dr. Jack Abrams struggles to manage the massive influx of agonizing casualties while consulting with the CDC, who initially suspect a rapidly spreading biological virus. Flashbacks reveal that ocean researchers Sam and Jaqueline previously uncovered lethal toxicity rates and giant mutated tongue-eating lice in the water, though Mayor John Stockman ignored their desperate alerts before the creatures slaughtered them. With local cell towers disabled and a severe quarantine imposed by regional authorities, communication with the outside world collapses completely.
