The Last Blossom plot recap, spoiler-light
In the story The Last Blossom, 73-year-old inmate Minoru Akutsu lies dying in solitary confinement when he is visited by a talking balsam flower. The flower's presence triggers memories of his life in 1987, when he lived with Nana Nagata and her infant son Kensuke. Although emotionally guarded, Akutsu grew deeply attached to them.
As Japan's economy boomed, Akutsu plunged into real-estate speculation, earning substantial wealth while drifting into hedonism. When young Kensuke developed dilated cardiomyopathy and needed an expensive overseas heart transplant, Akutsu turned to his sworn brother Tsutsumi for help. Tsutsumi orchestrated a dangerous plan to steal 300 million yen from their yakuza syndicate and eliminate a rival member, Wakamatsu.
Akutsu agreed to the criminal scheme in order to fund the lifesaving operation. During the robbery, Tsutsumi killed Wakamatsu. Akutsu took full responsibility for the crimes and received a life sentence, while Kensuke's surgery ultimately succeeded.
