Blue Heron plot recap, spoiler-light
Set in the late 1990s on Vancouver Island, Blue Heron follows a Hungarian immigrant family of six trying to establish a fresh start. The household consists of two parents and four children, with Jeremy as the oldest son from his mother's previous relationship. Sasha is the eldest daughter among the younger siblings.
As they settle into their new environment, the family faces escalating tension due to Jeremy's increasingly dangerous and unpredictable conduct. He partakes in petty theft, scales perilous heights, vanishes for extended periods, and subjects his siblings to bullying and sudden bursts of rage. While he possesses a remarkable gift for drawing maps and occasional moments of tenderness, his emotional detachment baffles the household.
The parents attempt numerous parenting and therapeutic interventions, but none yield lasting results. Eventually, facing exhaustion and a lack of alternatives, they consult a social worker who proposes a voluntary placement with another family. Though aghast at the prospect, the parents ultimately move forward with the difficult decision.
