Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island plot recap, spoiler-light
Chiikawa, Hachiware, Usagi, and other familiar characters travel to a mysterious summer destination following a lucrative invitation. The island is supposedly hiding a long-lost mermaid secret, offering sparkling seas and celebrations. At night, Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi stumble into a cave belonging to Siren, a legendary creature who once helped crops grow with her magical singing.
The group learns a grim history involving a dead mermaid, immortal islanders named Hitoha and Futaba who possess mechanical battery slots for eternal life, and Siren's violent grief over her lost companion. The next day, the islanders confess they invited outsiders strictly to help suppress the enraged Siren. When Siren attacks, most visitors flee in terror, leaving Chiikawa and friends behind.
Chiikawa escapes to a remote restaurant owned by Shimajirō, who serves clam soup and spicy curry rice. With Shimajirō freeing the captives and Rakko organizing a plan, Chiikawa proposes using spicy curry to neutralize Siren's devastating singing voice before the final confrontation begins on the island.

The final act begins as Siren attacks the village once again. Chiikawa and the group attempt to force their prepared spicy curry into Siren's mouth, but the creature surprisingly enjoys the spice and remains entirely unaffected. Shimajirō steps forward to shield the others from a dangerous assault, offering a Carolina Reaper pepper as the ultimate solution guaranteed to overwhelm her palate.
After the group forces the Carolina Reaper-laced curry into her mouth, Siren begins writhing in agony from the intense heat. In her thrashing, she strikes Hachiware and Chiikawa with her tail, but Futaba quickly rushes in to protect them. The violent blow knocks away Futaba's battery cover, exposing the mechanical compartment underneath.
Noticing the exposed battery slot, Siren finally acknowledges Hachiware's desperate pleas to cease her assault on the villagers. Calmed by this realization and distracted by the burning sensation, Siren retreats back into the ocean waters to cool her mouth. In the aftermath, Chiikawa visits Hitoha and Futaba's home to help nurse Futaba, where Chiikawa watches Hitoha replace the discharged battery.
Connecting this observation with a hidden mermaid scale found earlier, Chiikawa pieces together that Hitoha and Futaba were the original culprits who killed and consumed the mermaid. During the subsequent celebration of Siren's defeat, Chiikawa attempts to confront them about the discovery but ultimately decides to keep the dark secret, choosing instead to join the joyful party. The following morning, Chiikawa and the friends bid farewell, departing the island amid cheers and parting gifts from the residents.
Aboard the ship, Usagi pulls a mermaid scale out of Chiikawa's pochette, which then blows away in the wind. As the scale drifts back toward the island, Chiikawa happily resumes chatting with friends. The story reaches its final image with a post-credits sequence revealing that Hitoha and Futaba have fled their home and arrived on a brand-new island, settling inside a cave. Meanwhile, Siren and her two surviving mermaids swim through the nearby ocean, steadily closing the distance toward the hidden fugitives.
What does the ending of Chiikawa the Movie: The Secret of the Mermaid Island mean?
One major reading of the ending centers on the burdens of keeping secrets and the fragility of peace. The narrative resolves the physical conflict through spicy food and a moment of mutual recognition over mechanical immortality, yet it deliberately leaves the emotional and moral fallout unresolved. Chiikawa chooses silence over exposure, prioritizing communal harmony and the joy of friendship over harsh truths. The closing moments and post-credits sequence suggest that escaping one's past is impossible, as the consequences of past actions inevitably catch up, leaving the final fate of the immortal characters open to interpretation.

How does eternal life work on the island?
