Marty Supreme plot recap, spoiler-light
In 1952 New York City, Marty Mauser works as a shoe salesman while chasing his ambition of achieving table tennis greatness. Driven to reach the British Open, he steals from his uncle Murray's shop to fund his trip to London. Overseas, Marty impresses during the tournament and romances the former actress Kay Stone, though he ultimately loses the final to Koto Endo.
His journey descends into a chaotic spiral of international travel, failed business ventures involving novelty orange balls, and strained ties with his pregnant childhood friend Rachel Mizler. After returning to New York, Marty faces mounting debts, legal trouble from his uncle, and dangerous clashes with a local mobster named Ezra Mishkin and furious bowlers. He relies on a series of desperate hustles, erratic thefts, and brief reconciliations while trying to secure the funds and permissions needed to play competitively again.
Kay, funded by her wealthy husband Milton Rockwell, crosses paths with Marty repeatedly, providing both financial lifelines and further complications. As personal betrayals mount and Mishkin's threats escalate, Marty's reckless pursuit of respect and athletic validation pushes him toward a final confrontation across the globe.
