Roofman plot recap, spoiler-light
In North Carolina during 1998, a divorced former Army Ranger named Jeffrey Manchester struggles to support his three children. Prompted by memories of his military observations, he begins robbing McDonald's restaurants by cutting holes in the roofs and locking morning workers gently in walk-in freezers. Earning the media moniker Roofman, he commits dozens of heists before getting arrested at his daughter's birthday party and receiving a forty-five-year prison sentence.
Following a clever prison break, Jeffrey reaches out to his former military friend Steve for help. When Steve leaves for a contract in Afghanistan, Jeffrey is forced to hide out inside a Toys R Us store for six months. Surviving undetected behind the bicycle shelves, he watches the staff and develops a strong soft spot for an employee named Leigh, who is frequently mistreated by her manager Mitch. Jeffrey secretly steals toys for Leigh's church charity drive, attends a service posing as a New Yorker named John Zorn, and is subsequently introduced to Leigh by the congregation.
