Jade Li is a witty Chinese-Canadian aspiring actress living with a traditional, demanding family that values public persona and prosperity above all. While her father pins his financial hopes on penny stocks, Jade strives for double happiness by balancing her own desires with her family's rigid rules. She works in a family friend's shop, endures awkward arranged dates with eligible Chinese bachelors, and secretly pursues acting bit parts.
Meanwhile, she leads a separate social life with her best friend Lisa. After a night out, Jade meets a Caucasian man named Mark and sleeps with him. When her car breaks down the next morning, her late return exposes her secret, resulting in her father restricting her with a strict curfew.
Undeterred, Jade continues seeing Mark in secret while navigating family visits from her father's childhood friend Ah Hong. Although one arranged date with a man named Andrew turns out to be a relief when he reveals he is gay, Jade's secret dating life eventually shatters when her father catches her kissing Mark on the front porch.
