Rurouni Kenshin plot recap, spoiler-light
Set during the Meiji era in Japan, Rurouni Kenshin follows a wandering former assassin with a dark past. As a young boy, Shinta is rescued by the master swordsman Hiko Seijūrō, who renames him Kenshin and trains him in the deadly Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū style. Driven by a desire to protect the weak, Kenshin leaves his master to join the revolutionary forces against the Tokugawa shogunate.
He becomes a feared assassin known as the Hitokiri Battōsai, carrying out secret executions for the Choshu clan. During this turbulent period, Kenshin slays a bodyguard named Kiyosato Akira, whose dying blade etches the first mark of a fateful cross-shaped scar into Kenshin's cheek. Shortly after, Kenshin crosses paths with Yukishiro Tomoe, a mysterious woman who unknowingly harbors a deep connection to his past. As political tensions rise and a traitor infiltrates their ranks, Kenshin and Tomoe are forced into hiding in a quiet village, where they begin to live as a married couple and slowly develop genuine feelings for one another, entirely unaware of the dangerous web of vengeance surrounding them.
