The Brutalist plot recap, spoiler-light
Hungarian-Jewish architect László Tóth immigrates to post-war America, initially facing hardship and betrayal from his cousin Attila after a failed library renovation for wealthy industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren. Years later, a recovering László is hired by Harrison to construct a massive community center called the Van Buren Institute, prompting the arrival of his wife Erzsébet and niece Zsófia from Europe. As construction progresses, the project is plagued by financial strain, train derailments, and bitter clashes with contractors.
A period in New York follows after a temporary shutdown, during which Zsófia recovers her voice and prepares to move to Jerusalem. When Harrison restarts the project, László travels to Carrara for marble, where Harrison assaults him. The trauma unravels László's mental state, leading to a strained domestic life and a dramatic confrontation when Erzsébet publicly accuses Harrison of rape at his home.
