The Musical plot recap, spoiler-light
Doug Leibowitz works as a frustrated middle school theater teacher and aspiring playwright who longs to relocate to New York City. At the start of the school term, he finds out that his former girlfriend Abigail, who teaches art, has entered a relationship with Principal Brady. Feeling bitter about his stagnant career and personal life, Doug plots vengeance against Principal Brady to sabotage the administrator's ambition of securing a Blue Ribbon of Academic Excellence for the institution.
He replaces the planned production of West Side Story with The Heroes, an inappropriate and provocative play he authored concerning the September 11th terrorist attacks. Doug makes his students swear secrecy and convinces them they are rebelling against an oppressive system. When Principal Brady intervenes and forces Doug to give a Latina student named Lata the lead role instead of a white student, and demands to observe rehearsals, Doug forces the children to practice both shows. The students rehearse West Side Story in the mornings and the covert 9/11 musical in the afternoons, managing the grueling double schedule for the principal's inspection.
