The Ugly Stepsister plot recap, spoiler-light
In a fairy-tale kingdom obsessed with shallow beauty, widow Rebekka marries an older widower named Otto, whose sudden death leaves both families financially destitute. To save them from poverty, Rebekka plots to marry off her eldest daughter, Elvira, to Prince Julian at a royal ball. Believing Elvira is too unattractive to secure the prince, Rebekka subjects her to brutal cosmetic treatments, while their household hides Otto's rotting corpse because they cannot afford a proper burial.
Meanwhile, stepdaughter Agnes is initially friendly until family tensions and financial betrayals sour their dynamic. Elvira enrolls in Sophie von Kronenberg's finishing school, where she faces harsh humiliation for her looks and willingly swallows a tapeworm egg for weight loss. After Elvira catches Agnes sleeping with the stable boy Isak, Rebekka banishes Isak and demotes Agnes to a household servant, nicknamed Cinderella. As the grand royal ball nears, Elvira's health deteriorates severely from the parasite, while Agnes secretly receives magical assistance from her deceased mother to attend the ball in disguise.
