Train Dreams plot recap, spoiler-light
Train Dreams chronicles eighty years in the life of Robert Grainier, an orphaned boy who arrives near Bonners Ferry, Idaho, in 1893. He eventually finds purpose and love when he marries Gladys Olding, and together they build a modest log cabin along the Moyie River and welcome a daughter named Kate. To support his family, Robert works jobs in railroad construction and seasonal logging, witnessing numerous tragedies along the way, including the wrongful death of a Chinese worker and the fatal accidents of fellow loggers.
These experiences and long absences strain his domestic life. After World War I, Robert and Gladys plan to farm and build a lumber mill to keep him close to home. However, tragedy strikes when Robert returns from his final logging season to find their cabin destroyed by a wildfire and both Gladys and Kate missing. Though he eventually rebuilds the cabin with the help of his friend Ignatius Jack, Robert struggles to find his place in a rapidly changing world filled with new technologies and rougher men, ultimately leaving the logging industry behind to work as a carriage driver and interact with figures like Forest Service worker Claire Thompson.
