When They Cry plot recap, spoiler-light
When Keiichi Maebara relocates to the tranquil village of Hinamizawa in June 1983, he quickly forms close bonds with Rena, Mion, Shion, Satoko, and Rika. The community prepares for the annual Watanagashi Festival, a local celebration honoring the deity Oyashiro. Beneath the peaceful surface lies a chilling tradition: for four consecutive years, a mysterious murder or disappearance has occurred on the night of the festival, dubbed the Oyashiro Curse by superstitious residents.
Following this year's festival, authorities discover the lifeless body of photographer Jirō Tomitake, who seemingly tore his throat out, alongside the charred remains of nurse Miyo Takano. Throughout various timelines, Keiichi and his friends attempt to uncover the truth, only to be consumed by extreme paranoia and violent impulses. Rika's body is subsequently discovered, and a catastrophic event destroys the entire village population, officially blamed on a toxic swamp gas leak. These events repeat in multiple alternate realities where Rika constantly dies and restarts her life.
