Hugo plot recap, spoiler-light
Set in 1931 Paris, the story follows young Hugo Cabret, an orphan who maintains the large clocks at Gare Montparnasse following the deaths of his father and the disappearance of his alcoholic uncle Claude. Desperate to find a message from his late father, Hugo works tirelessly to repair a broken mechanical automaton using parts pilfered from a grumpy toy merchant named Georges. When Georges catches him, Hugo forms a friendship with Georges' goddaughter, Isabelle.
Their bond deepens when Isabelle discovers that a heart-shaped key she wears activates the machine, causing it to sketch a scene from a famous early film. With the help of a passionate film historian named René, Hugo and Isabelle uncover that the bitter merchant is actually Georges Méliès, a legendary and long-forgotten filmmaker believed to have perished during the turmoil of the First World War.
