The Doll plot recap, spoiler-light
The narrative follows Wokulski, an ambitious descendant of a fallen Polish noble line who begins his adult life serving patrons at Hopfer's restaurant in Warsaw. Although he harbors deep aspirations toward scientific learning, his involvement in the 1863 insurrection against the Russian Empire leads to an arduous period of Siberian exile. Upon earning his freedom and reentering Warsaw, he secures employment at Mincel's shop, eventually marrying the deceased proprietor's widow.
Her subsequent passing leaves him with capital, which he invests into a lucrative venture with an acquaintance from his exile days. Journeying to Bulgaria amidst the Russo-Turkish War, Wokulski manages to generate immense wealth by provisioning the Russian military forces. Returning home as an extraordinarily affluent entrepreneur, his rational focus completely dissolves when he encounters Izabela, the daughter of the insolvent nobleman Tomasz Łęcki. Obsessed with securing her hand, Wokulski infiltrates elite social circles and seeks ways to rescue her family from imminent ruin.
