In The Love Hypothesis, biology PhD student Olive Smith impulsively kisses the stern Dr. Adam Carlsen to convince her best friend Anh that she is happily dating someone else. Adam agrees to maintain a fake relationship because it helps him secure his university grant.
As the pretend romance continues, they attend department events together, and Olive discovers that Adam was the kind researcher who once encouraged her before her Stanford interview. Bonding over shared vulnerabilities, including Olive's personal motivation for studying pancreatic cancer and Adam's past trauma with a toxic mentor, genuine feelings begin to develop between them. After a successful conference presentation in Boston, Olive and Adam share an intimate night together.
However, the situation quickly unravels when Tom Benton propositions Olive for sex in exchange for a research grant, threatening to ruin her reputation and steal her work if she speaks out. A misunderstanding leaves Olive heartbroken when Adam abruptly ends their fake arrangement, believing he is doing her a favor, while remaining unaware of Tom's despicable actions.
