Tim and Polly Thompson leave the city with their technology-addicted children, Beth, Fran, and Joe, after Polly quits her job over corporate spying. They move to a ramshackle countryside barn to start a home-grown tomato sauce business. Initially miserable without modern amenities, the children's lives change when young Fran discovers a fairy named Silky.
Fran is led to the Magic Faraway Tree, a mystical plant where a new fantastical land arrives at the top every single day. Soon, Beth and Joe are drawn into the adventures too, visiting places like the Land of Goodies and the Land of Birthdays. In the Land of Birthdays, Beth makes a careless wish for her father's business to fail.
As the family works together to fix up the farm and grows closer through their imaginative outings, tension builds with a strict deadline set by Polly's unscrupulous mother in London. When the grand opening arrives, all the tomatoes mysteriously turn rotten due to Beth's lingering wish, prompting the children to launch a daring rescue mission back up the tree to save their family's new life.
